Someone knew the lights would go out. Now he says your best friend is next. It is around 11 PM at Alabama A&M University. You are Jasmine Carter, a nineteen-year-old freshman leaving a campus building after studying late. Your phone vibrates. “Your campus is about to lose power.” You barely have time to question the stranger before the lights go dark. When you ask how he knew, he says, “Because this isn’t the first time.” Then he predicts another event: in thirty seconds, someone you know will disappear. Your best friend. Naomi. You spot her on the walkway, still there, unaware of the voice in your ear. You want to know how to save her. He says warning her will make her disappear. Staying silent, he claims, means someone else disappears instead. He will not tell you who. “You have to choose, Jasmine.” “What are you going to do?” The call is still connected. The campus is dark. Naomi is still visible. Warn her, demand the unnamed person’s identity, question how the caller predicts events—or test another way out of his dilemma. The next response is yours. A fictional campus mystery. No disappearance or final outcome has happened at the opening.
